Wasaga Beach Areas 1 to 6 Explained
Bayview Wasaga | Wasaga Beach, Ontario
If you've ever searched for a day at the beach in Wasaga Beach, you've seen the numbers: Beach Area 1, Beach Area 2, all the way up to Beach Area 6. Visitors and new residents often ask which one is best, and the honest answer is that they are all part of one long shoreline. What changes from one section to the next is the atmosphere, the facilities and the crowd. This guide explains what each beach area is like so you can pick the right stretch of sand for the day, or for the way you'd like to live.
One Long Beach, Six Numbered Sections
Wasaga Beach Provincial Park manages the beach in numbered sections, and the water is known for being shallow and gentle across all of them. Beach Areas 1 to 6 are part of the same continuous beach, so you can walk from one to the next along the shore. Two other beach areas, New Wasaga and Allenwood, are separate from this main stretch because the mouth of the Nottawasaga River cuts them off, but they're popular in their own right.
Beach Area 1: The Lively Hub
Beach Area 1 is the busiest and most energetic section, with the boardwalk, beach-themed shops, restaurants and many of the town's events nearby. It also has a splash pad and plenty of ice cream and casual food, so it appeals to families as well as groups of friends. If you want people-watching, patios and a summer buzz, start here.
Best for: first-time visitors, families who want amenities close by, event days.
Beach Area 2: Lively, With a Little More Room
Beach Area 2 sits next to the main action and shares its boardwalk-and-amenities feel, but it tends to be a bit easier to settle into than Area 1. It's a good choice when you want to be close to restaurants and shops without being in the middle of the busiest crowd. The provincial park's Nancy Island Historic Site is also nearby if you'd like to add a bit of history to your visit.
Best for: walkable beach days, mixing sand time with a bite to eat.
Beach Area 3: The Dog-Friendly Beach
Beach Area 3 is the park's designated dog beach and is the only stretch of beach where dogs are permitted, so it's the one to know if you're visiting with a pet. Dogs must be leashed in all park areas, and they're also allowed in grassy picnic areas, on park trails and on the boardwalks at Beach Areas 1 and 2. The Park Office is located near this section as well.
Best for: dog owners, a quieter alternative to Areas 1 and 2.
Beach Area 4: Shade, Picnics and a Family Feel
Beaches 2 through 4 are known for their shade trees and grassy picnic areas where barbecuing is allowed. Beach Area 4 has a playground and a calmer, more relaxed pace, which makes it a favourite for family picnics. It is accessed from 24th Street North, and opening dates can differ from other areas early in the season, so check the park's website before you go.
Best for: family picnics, shade, kids' play time.
Beach Area 5: A Local, Cottage-Style Feel
Beach Areas 5 and 6 feel more like a residential beach neighbourhood, with many seasonal cottage owners and some locals who live in cottages converted for year-round use. Beach Area 5 has a playground and easy access from Sunnidale Road, and it offers a more low-key day than the busy central beaches.
Best for: quieter days, easy parking and access, a local feel.
Beach Area 6: Calm and Residential
Beach Area 6 continues the quieter, cottage-community atmosphere, and it's a good choice when you want space to spread out and a peaceful walk along the water. The shallow, swimmable water is the same as elsewhere on the beach, with far less bustle.
Best for: relaxed walks, quiet swims, a peaceful beach day.
New Wasaga Beach: Wide Open Space Across the River
New Wasaga is a separate beach area of the provincial park, set apart from Beach Areas 1 to 6 by the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. Because the river divides it from the main strip, it has a character of its own: a wide-open shoreline where the sand seems to stretch on and on, popular with seasonal residents and visitors who want a change from the main beach areas.
This is also where The Residences at Bayview is located, with direct beach access. For residents, that changes how the beach fits into daily life. Instead of treating it as a planned outing, you can make it part of an ordinary day, whether that's an early walk along the shore, an evening swim or a long summer afternoon on the sand. The beach areas to the east remain within reach for the boardwalk, restaurants and events whenever you want a livelier scene.
For visitors, parking at New Wasaga has been paid on arrival, first come, first served, rather than booked in advance, so confirm the current arrangement with Ontario Parks before you go. To see exactly where the community sits along the shoreline, visit the The Residences at Bayview location page.
Best for: open stretches of sand, a change of scene from the main beach areas, and living with direct beach access.
What to Know Before You Go
Parking: A daily vehicle permit is required to park at the provincial park beach areas, and permits are not transferable between locations in the park or the municipal parking areas in town. Booking in advance through Ontario Parks is recommended, especially on summer weekends.
Day-use only: Fires are not permitted. Barbecues are allowed in the grassy picnic areas in a contained unit raised off the ground, and coals go in the charcoal pits provided at Beach Areas 1 to 6.
Dogs: Only Beach Area 3 permits dogs on the sand, and all dogs must be leashed.
Water quality: Check the park's alerts page for beach postings and opening dates before you head out.
Rules change: Permit details, fees and opening dates are updated each season, so confirm current information on the Ontario Parks website.

Planning a family picnic with shade? Beach Areas 3 and 4
